Dutch immigrated by the thousands to New Zealand in the 1950s and again in the 1980s and 90s (more than 28,000 identified themselves as Dutch in the 2006 census). Sinterklaas is the main Dutch tradition kept by Dutch ex-pats wherever they may be. Sinterklaas arrives on The Strand by boat to a welcome by the mayor and others. The Sint's helpers hand out Dutch kruidnoten (small round cookies). Dutch poffertjes are available for purchase.
