Sv. Mikalojus Celebration

The event, initiated in 2010, is intended to draw attention to the city's history and support shops and guild traditions. The St. Nicholas statue is brought in procession from St. Nicholas Church to Kaunas Cathedral, where it is placed near the altar during Mass. The statue is then taken in procession to the Town Hall and placed on display. The mayor presents the key to the city of Kaunas to St. Nicholas. Saint Nicholas then comes down to greet townspeople and distribute gifts. Marking the beginning of the holiday season, St. Nicholas leads the people around the Christmas tree and greets Christmas market stall keepers, giving them lucky badges for a good season. Money for a children's charity is collected all year in the Town Hall Square, as tourists, and others, drop coins at the wax smelter exhibit.
