O the Saturday before December 6th, Saint Nicolas comes down from a building roof, mounts his carriage and begins the carnival parade. The parade goes through the town with twenty costumed brass bands, wonderful creatures, animals, automatons, and many surprises for children. Saint Nicolas boards on a fishing boat from the Quai Gambetta to deliver presents to the children of the world. Fireworks follow. Saint Nicolas marks the beginning of the Christmas festivities, particularly lighting and the opening of the Christmas market.
