St. Nikolaus' Austrian popularity is reflected in the approximately 160 Austrian churches dedicated to him. One is St Nikola, Pram in Upper Austria. This church suffered great damage during the Thirty Years War and was restored as a smaller place. In 1973 it was thoroughly restored. To raise funds, a special post-office was founded which has a philatelistic Nikolaus event each year. In 1981 the high school in Pram held a competition for a drawing of Nikolaus for an Austrian Christmas stamp. Fourteen-year-old Maria Freund's design was used on the stamp. The design was patterned after the altar-piece in the St Nikola church in Pram, which was created by the Rieder painter Franz Streußenberger in 1862.
