 Ecumenical St. Nicholas Ministry

This special ecumenical ministry carries out the spirit of St. Nicholas as it seeks to aid those in need. Begun in 1988 it is still going strong.

St. Nicholas Ministry provides gifts of food, blankets, Bibles, toys and personal items to those in need in Lavaca County, Texas.

The project began in 1988 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hallettsville. It is now supported by 12 churches in Halletsville, Sublime, Shiner and Moulton. Public and parochial schools, individuals and community organizations all work together with the churches making the county-wide project succeed.

The project is patterned on the ministry of Jesus in the tradition of St. Nicholas, who cared for those in need. Coordinated by the churches, the project works with schools, helping agencies, health care providers and more.

Those to receive assistance are referred by schools, pastors or church leaders, Texas Department of Human Services, Senior Citizens Center, County Probation Department, Lavaca Assistance Ministry Body, and others. Referral forms are provided to be filled out and submitted to St. Nicholas Ministry.

Though the project strives to meet all needs, priority is given to children up to the age of 13, then elderly, and last to families.

Several area business host containers to collect donated items. Non-perishable food, blankets, quilts, new toys and financial donations are collected.

Volunteers sort food and wrap gifts in the week before distribution on a Saturday morning in mid-December.
