Fargo, North Dakota, USASt. Nicholas Baskets
Children in Faith Formation classes, and the entire parish, bring non-perishable food items during the month of November. On the 1st Wednesday in December, Saint Nicholas visits, telling his story and why his feast day is celebrated. On the way to their classes, the children leave their shoes, lining the hallway. During class time the focus is on Advent, stories and information. The adults in the gym fill merchant-donated reuseable shopping bags with the donated food and candy canes. Children color St. Nicholas cards and write a note to attach to the bags. The bags (baskets) will be given for distribution to a local childcare center’s families. When the children returned to the gym, they found Saint Nicholas had put candy canes in their shoes. Warm cider and Christmas carols completed the evening.
