Clifton, New Jersey, USAFeast of St. Nicholas
A Youth Bishop is installed as part of the celebration of the Feast of St. Nicholas. Patterning the ceremony after the tradition at Salisbury Cathedral, the rector prays for the new bishop, then vests the youth with a cope. The former Youth Bishop presents the crozier that was specially carved with symbols for St. Peter (crossed keys), the parish patron, and St. Nicholas (three coins). The newly installed bishop sat in the bishop’s throne during the Eucharist and joined the rector in blessing the people at the end of the service. Carrying out St. Nicholas’ custom of gift giving, the Youth Bishop gave everyone the gift of an icon prayer card of St. Nicholas. In this way St. Nicholas is remembered and the role of children in the church is celebrated. The installation of girl as Youth Bishop also commemorated the role of women who serve as ordained bishops, priests and deacons in the Episcopal Church.
