Chauseslä Unterägeri

Unterägeri, Canton Zug, Switzerland

Civic Festival, 5 December

Customs rooted in the 16th century have continued the spirit of St. Nicholas. Children collect treats in the afternoon of 5 December with their chlaussesels, donkey-like wooden characters. In the evening adults and teenagers form groups to collect charitable donations to benefit the developing world. A Samichlaus leads each group, accompanied by a Schmutzli, huge iffãllã lanterns, large cowbells, cow horns, and whips, as well as chaussesel.
