The traditional St. Nicholas Mass is held in the Church of St. Michael on St. Nicholas Feast Day, December 6. It includes blessing of the 5-pound St. Nicholas candle, with the diameter of a mast, to ask protection for those that work on the river. St. Nicholas bread (Nikolausbrö) in the shape of fish, is blessed and distributed to the poor. The Brotherhood in Bernkastel was formed in 1338 for boatmen and fishermen. It was the first guild established in the city and the only one for several centuries.
