Pollutri, ItalyFesta di San Nicola
St Nicholas is the patron saint of Pollutri and devotion to him goes back to the early 1700s. He has a chapel in Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore with an altar painting and statues. The town celebrates its patron in both December and May. Beans, bread and wine are distributed to the faithful during the December festival. On the eve of the festival, fava beans are cooked in large copper pots outside the church in memory of a famine during the 15th century. The bread is impressed with the saint’s image. In May the bread is round, shaped more like a bagel.
