The cathedral was built 1901-1902. Support for construction came from Emperor Nicholas II, and parishioners, even giving their own jewelry. In 1901 donations were collected for all churches in Russia. The church became a cathedral in 1905 when Bishop Tikhon moved the administration of the diocese to New York from San Francisco. The church is the only example of Moscow Baroque in New York, and possibly in all America. The cathedral seats 900. On the 100th anniversary the newly renovated cathedral was rededicated. The cathedral is a New York City Landmark.
