St Nicholas Church—Mamontov Hermitage

Mamontovo, Tambov Oblast Russia

Russian Orthodox

The hermitage was opened in 1629 by the monk Mamas, whose name was given to the village and monastery. The St Nicholas Church was built from 1768-75. After the monastery closed, it became a community for women and in 1912 the first stone church was built. After 1917 a children's commune was put into the church, later a wine shop. The Holy Lake became a goose farm. The monastery was destroyed in 1930. Even during the Soviet era, pilgrims continued to come to pray and receive healing in the lake. The convent was revived in 2003 and new chapel, church, and font were built.
