This new picture book by Jan Schenkman shaped and standardized modern Dutch Sinterklaas customs. It began the shift to making Sinterklaas a fixture in schools, reinforcing learning and good behavior. The Dutch customs of Sint Nicolaas coming on a steamboat from Spain with a Moorish assistant originated with this book.
