According to centuries-old Tyrolean folklore, on St. Nicholas Eve, which falls on December 5 each year, Santa Claus dresses in bishop's vestments and makes a visit to all the Tyrol's children. He rewards the youngsters for the obedience, honesty, and charity throughout the year with sweets, fruits, and small gifts. This annual event takes place in the family's living room, known as the stube, wherein sits the traditional masonry stove used for cooking and heating.
