The Basilica di San Nicola is on the left. The small sailing vessel that carries the statue of San Nicola during the May Festival of the Translation of the Relics has become a symbol for Bari and the international fair, Fiera del Levante. The first fair was held in 1930 and has taken place every September since, except 1940-46. Bari serves as a bridge between East and West Europe and the Mediterranean; the fair brings vendors together from throughout the region.
