wBaptismal Font

Winchester Cathedral
Anglican
Winchester, England

This mid-12th century Norman font, two sides carved with scenes from the life of St Nicholas, is made of Belgian black marble from Tournai.

The top story shows the grateful father kneeling in gratitude for dowry money that saved his daughters, Nicholas is in front of his church.

The lower scene has two stories. The evil butcher and three children are on the left with St Nicholas rescuing the children in the center. On the right is the story of the golden cup, showing the noble father in a boat on his way to give a cup to the St Nicholas church. Again, a child is rescued.
