Saint Nicholas with a fragment of the monastery wall on the right, the Transfiguration Cathedral and Bell Tower in the background

The icon of St. Nicholas appeared in 1380 to the leader of the struggle of Russian troops against the Tartar-Mongolians, Dmitriy Donskoy, Grand Duke of Moscow and Vladimir, to signal success in the Kulikovo Plain battle. The monastery was built where the icon miraculously appeared (15 kilometers from Moscow).
