Maxi Card 1955 December 10 Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Antalya, Turkey 8 × 5 1/4 inches Inside text: Greetings of the Season from Demre, Turkey, Home of the Saint of Christmas More than 16 centuries ago, in this ancient seaport, St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, lived out his dedicated life. Destined to become the Patron Saint of sailors, merchants and—above all—children, he was of such surpassing charity that his reputation spread throughout the world. One of his earliest acts of generosity was to provide dowries for three penniless girls. Because these gifts and many others were made at Christmastime, St. Nicholas became identified with holiday giving. And, today, as in generations past, good St. Nich—or Santa Claus—continues to delight the expectant hearts of children. I am sending you this Christmas Greeting from Demre, Turkey, the only true home of St. Nicholas, where the Church of St. Nicholas still stands. The stamp was designed by Believe It Or Not and shows the church as it is today. The Republic of Turkey graciously made it possible for us to be the first to use this special new stamp issue. MERRY CHRISTMAS Doug Storer, President Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
