St. Nicholas Cross
Cross Pin or Pendant
Scotlandca 1950
Sterling silver
1 1/8 × 1 1/4 inches
The early Celtic Christian design of the cross is from a cross-slab, thought to be a grave marker, dug up near the St Nicholas Chapel on Papa Stronsay, Orkney, in the 18th century. The slab has been lost, but a drawing exists which dates the slab to the 8th century on stylistic grounds. Piece is not hallmarked.
