The picture shows two young women who received sugar hearts and large speculaas dolls for Sinterklaas—such gifts were traditionally received from suitors, or young men interested in becoming suitors.

At one time the speculaas dolls were offered as a proposal. A young man would give a young woman a speculaas doll, called a vrijer (a person who loves or lover). Accepting the doll meant accepting the marriage proposal.
