Douaumont Ossuary
Douaumont, France

This image of Saint Nicolas, from a priest's chasuble, hangs in the bell tower of the Douamont Ossuary. The ossuary contains the remains of more than 100,000 unknown soldiers who died in the Battle of Verdun. The 1916 battle also destroyed nine villages, six of them have been left unrestored as a memorial to war. The chasuble would have belonged to one of the village churches, most likely Haumont-près-Samogneux as its church was dedicated to St. Nicolas.
