The small sailing vessel that carries the statue of San Nicola during the May Festival of the Translation of the Relics has become a symbol for Bari and the international fair, Fiera del Levante. The first fair was held in 1930 and has taken place every September since, except 1940-46. Bari serves as a bridge between East and West Europe and the Mediterranean; the fair brings vendors together from throughout the region.
