The icon was commissioned for the 800th anniversary of the founding of Sint-Niklaas, Belgium. The city developed from the Saint-Nicholas Church and named for Saint-Nicholas. The bridge from Mostar, Bosnia, symbolizes Saint Nicholas bridging east and west. The church is Saint Nicholas Church in Sint-Niklaas. The boat symbolizes the barrel with the three boys, Saint Nicholas as patron saint of sailors and traveling merchants. The colors of the sail are the colors of Waasland, the region of Sint-Niklaas. The icon has visited churches, schools, societies, and other places.
