Crkva sv. Nikole

Pula (Kastel Hill), Istria Croatia

Serbian Orthodox

The church is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Croatia. This sixth century church was originally dedicated to the Madonna. It was extensively rebuilt around 1200. In 1583 it was given to the Orthodox community to serve immigrants from Greece and Cyprus; the church was remodeled and dedicated to Saint Nicholas. It remained Greek Orthodox until 1785. Serbs settled there in 1657 and also used the Saint Nicholas Church. Damaged in World War II it was renovated in 1963. Its treasure of icons and vessels was plundered in 1990 and the church was stoned in 1992. The church still serves the large local Serbian community.
