There has been a place of worship here for over 700 years. The church, rebuilt around 1750, is on a Norman foundation and some Norman work remains. It has been altered several times, the last adding an extension in 1993. The Australia Chapel, honoring Captain Arthur Philip who landed and named Sydney (Australia) in 1788, was dedicated in 1975. He served as the first Governor-in-Chief of New South Wales. He retired to Bathampton and his grave is at the church, marked by a large stone just inside the door.
