St Nicholas Church

Hazeleigh, Essex England UK

[Church of England (Anglican)]

This little church, built around 1600, was made of lath and plaster over a timber frame, a method of building used in cottages. As the population had moved away from the Old Hall by the end of the 1800s, the church was neglected. A new, iron church was built in 1893 in a more convenient part of the village. The last service was held in 1906 and, St Nicholas, beyond repair, was demolished in 1922. The parish register dates from 1589. The iron church was also eventually demolished and the "Beautiful Bell" from 1793 hangs in Woodham Mortimer church. The altar rail may also be in another church. The site is now woodland, with gravestones still among the undergrowth.
