Church Website

The church is a former private chapel on the site of the 12th century St Nicholas parish church that was adjacent to Loughton Hall. As St Nicholas was distant from the village, in 1846 St. John's was built. All but St Nicholas' chancel was demolished; it served as a mortuary chapel until it was razed in 1877. A new private chapel was built that served Loughton Hall until 1947 when it was attached to St. John's. Several 17th century brasses, a 16th century painting and some glass is thought to be from the old church. It is now part of the Loughton Team Ministry with St John the Baptist and Trinity (shared with Methodists) on the Debden Estate. Sunday Eucharist is celebrated weekly at St Nicholas. Sarah Catherine Martin, author of "Old Mother Hubbard," is buried in the churchyard.
