The church dates from 1350, though some parts are older and their are remains of a wooden church from around AD 1000. It was completed in the later 1600s. Repairs were carried out in 1746 and 1825. Before the Danish Reformation there were a series of chapels and altars connected with craft guilds in the town. Originally Romanesque, over the years Gothic additions were made. The tower is from the early 1400s. The repeatedly damaged spire was redesigned in 1906.
