The 11th century Saxon round tower is a "D" shape added to an existing wall. The tower walls are 2 feet 6 inches thick. It was probably built by inexperienced builders using inadequate materials—hard chalk (clunch) with flints and lime mortar. The part above the nave on the west was rebuilt with brick in 1881. In the 1990s, to prevent collapse, the tower was fitted with metal bands and staples, with a new exterior layer of cement.
