When the Spanish established what is now Jacksonville, Florida, it was known as St. Nicholas Ferry. Fort St Nicholas was built on the south bank of the St Johns River to regulate traffic and provide protection. A stone marker beside Atlantic Boulevard points to the fort's location.

There is still an area known as St. Nicholas in Jacksonville. St. Nicholas Park Christian Church was founded in 1920. The present building was built in 1953.
