St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

Enfield, Connecticut USA

[Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America]

Greek immigrants came to the Enfield area in the early 1900s to work in the carpet mills. In 1916 the Orpheum Theater, that had shown silent movies, was purchased and is the site of the church today. The church was named for St. Nicholas as several of the members were from Koniska in Greece, which has him for its patron saint. Fire destroyed the theater building in 1925 and a new church built. From the 1940s until 1960 the pastor was a tent-making pastor, also operating a grocery store. The church burned again in 1978 and was again rebuilt on the same site. The church is no longer an immigrant church and had become an integral part of the Endfield community. The church closed by November 2016.
