Tacoma, Washington USA
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
Greeks first came to Tacoma in 1901, to escape poverty or conscription into the Turkish army. By 1914 they numbered 1000, working on the railroad, in sawmills, and as shop keepers. The church was established in 1924, with services in an Episcopal building. The church was named for St. Nicholas because he is the patron saint of fishermen and fishing provided the living for the village of Gallimi, from whence many had come. The Sunday School published bi-lingual booklets in use until 1960.
