Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
Around 1900 the first Greek families came to Staten Island. Attending church involved going to Manhattan, Brooklyn, or New Jersey. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church opened in 1930. St. Nicholas was added to the name in the late 1940s because St. Nicholas is the patron saint of islanders and also to honor parishioner Nicholas Skunakis, volunteer chanter for 31 years. After the Verrazano Bridge opened, many people moved to Staten Island and the church had its first full-time priest in 1965. A new church building was opened in 1970 with a community center to serve the needs of Staten Island Greek Orthodox families.
