Seldovia, Alaska USA
Orthodox Church in America (Russian)
The church, a landmark on the Kenai Peninsula, began around 1820. The first church was made of logs down along the beach. The present church is believed to have been built in 1891 and named St Nicholas at that time. The bell tower was installed in 1906. In 1981 the church was restored and reconsecrated. The name Seldovia is derived the Russian word 'seldevoy' meaning 'herring bay.' Today it is a commercial fishing and processing center, primarily shelfish.
