Orthodox immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, mostly Slovakia today, organized the church in 1894. The first church, St. George, was destroyed by a tornado. The second, the Protection of the Mother of God, was destroyed by fire. This church was dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra in 1916. After a lenthy time without a priest, one was asigned in 1965 and the church was renovated inside and out. Parishioners come from all over the Birmingham area and beyond. The liturgical language is English.
