Chignik Lake, a fishing village, is accessible only by airplane. In the early 1950s the village relocated to a more suitable place up the Chignik River to the shore of Chignik Lake. A new chapel was built and icons brought from the old church. In the late 1970s a new church was built, as the other had aged due to the weather. It was consecrated in 1981.
