St. Nicholas Church

Eklutna Heritage Park (Chugiak), Alaska USA

Orthodox Church in America (Russian)

Eklutna, dating to 1650, is the oldest continually inhabited Athabascan site near Anchorage. Russian Orthodox missionaries came in the early 1800s. The first log church was built in the 1830s. This newer church, next to the original one, was built in the 1960s. Regular services are held in English. In 2007 the parish was redesignated a Skete under St. Herman Monastery, on Spruce Island. It has since been returned to parish status.
