The ancient pre-conquest Saxon church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is incorporated into the present cruciform church. The Saxon walls are 0.78 metres thick and about 6 metres high. The church has been modified and considerably enlarged. The monks of St Sever owned the church for around 100 years, into the 12th century. Then the south aisle was built and the lancet window installed. In 1724 St Johns College became patron of the living, continuing to the present. Major repairs following lightning damage in 1862 brought further changes.
The Tackley church belongs to the Steeple Aston Benefice, with St Peter and St Paul, Steeple Aston, and St Mary the Virgin, North Aston. The St Nicholas Patronal Festival, combined with Christingle and a torch-light procession from the village hall, is a united festival service with the other local churches.
