Ekuk, means 'the last village down,' as it is the furthest village on the Nushagak Bay. It was mentioned in Russian accounts of 1824. The first salmon cannery opened in 1903. There is an influx of cannery workers in the summer. The chapel was built in 1918 or 1919, replacing an earlier church. It is located on a bluff and could be endangered in the future. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
