Belogorsky St. Nicholas Wonderworker Missionary Monastery

Belaya Gora, Amur Oblast Russia

Russian Orthodox

The monastery at Belogorsky began in the 1700s when cabins for fugitives from factories and Old Believers were built. As a place of pilgrimage, people have come for prayer, meditation, solitude, and discernment. In the Ural Mountains between Perm and Koungour, the place is called White Mountain—because the snow lasts longer here and the mountain is made of white limestone. Even more importantly, white is the color of purity and sanctity. White Mountain is a place of test for a white (clean) conscience. The monastery was used a mental hospital after the revolution; then as a hospital for soldiers & civilians during and after World War II. Restoration began in 1993.
