King's College Chapel is dedicated to both the Virgin Mary and St Nicholas. St Nicholas was the personal patron saint of the founder of the college, King Henry VI, who was born on St Nicholas Day (6 December). The foundation stone of the college was laid on Passion Sunday, 1441; the chapel was completed in 1515.
The reredos selected in 1906 was designed by Detmar Blow and Fernand Billery, thus ending a sixty-year competition. It was designed to encourage worshippers to look up to the great east window, remaining in place until the 1960s, when the gift of Ruben's "Adoration of the Magi" displaced it. The reredos is in storage and there is interest in it being restored and the Ruben's relocated.
