German immigrants founded Egg Harbor City as a German settlement around 1850. Streets going one way were named for prominent German citizens and the other way for cities around the world. The church was finished in 1864. German remained the predominant language until into the 1900s. In 2008 the parish was merged with the Church of the Assumption in Galloway, forming the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. St. Nicholas continues as a worship center with with Masses in English and Spanish. In honor of their 160th anniversary the church was gifted a St. Nicholas of Myra relic in 2024.
