Feltwell, Norfolk England UK
[Church of England (Anglican)]
St Nicholas stands on a small hill at the edge of the village; before the Fens were drained the sea came to the hill, making Nicholas the natural patron saint. This Norman building replaced a late 7th century Saxon church around 1071, as it was probably burned down by William the Conqueror. The nave burned in 1491 and was rebuilt. The chancel and vestry were removed in 1862 and in 1864 the church closed for services except funerals. The church reopened in 1924 with the installation of an altar, pulpit, reading desk, and an area set aside for a vestry. During the 1950s it was used for services in the winter as St Mary's was difficult to heat. Declared redundant in 1973 the church is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
