Parish of St Nicholas

Britwell Salome, Oxfordshire England UK

Church of England (Anglican)

The earliest church records are from 1234, but the great yew in the churchyard indicates that a church stood in this place long before that. The tree is dated to around AD 600. Many generations of foxes have nested around its huge base leaving hundreds of lamb and rabbit bones on the ground. In 1865 the two parishes of Britwell Salome and Britwell Prior combined into one. Both were pulled down, except for the chancel of Britwell Salome; the rebuilding took 2 1/2 years. Besides the chancel, the ancient church arch, south doorway, and round Norman font were kept. A tennis court was near the churchyard in the early 1900s.
