A round-headed window without glass, only shutters, indicates the church was probably here before the Norman conquest. The church is primarily from the 12th and 13th centuries. Much work in the 1870s added the north aisle, replaced the wooden belfry, and enlarged the nave. St Nicholas was the main parish place of worship until around 1900. After several attempts to close it, it was converted to a parish centre with chairs instead of pews and the pulpit and communion rail were removed. Weekly services are held from Common Worship, along with an informal monthly service.
