The 15th century church was badly damaged in an 1884 earthquake. The tower was rebuilt and the foundation strengthened with steel girders. Recently, shrinkage of the underlying London clay has threatened the building.
A German Zeppelin crashed near the church during World War I. Local police captured the crew. A man who died in the ncident is buried in the churchyard. It is said that parts of the Zeppelin were used in the tower reconstruction.
