The Norman tower collapsed when stuck by lightning in 1392, a 100 foot spire was added when repaired. The spire was removed in 1969 to reduce the load on the tower (100 tons of material was removed)

The church has ancient roots, probably going back 400 years before the Norman era, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The Norman structure has had many alterations and additions over the centuries.
