Church of England (Anglican)

Church Website

This 12th century church is now just 20 to 30 metres from the water as in the 1340s many acres were lost to the sea. The land was still shrinking in the 1800s. The island was joined to the mainland in 1870. In 1935 the Royal Airforce took over Thorney, building houses, hangars and runways. Almost closed in 1976 when the Airforce left, St Nicholas now is part of the Southbourne Benefice with St John the Evangelist. Army chaplains have maintained worship since 1992. Access is restricted.
