Iglesia de San Nicolás de Los Servitas

Madrid Spain

Roman Catholic

The oldest church in Madrid and all Spain, it was already established in 1202 and serves Italian residents. Founded in the early 1100s, the church served as a mosque in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the late 1200s it was transformed into a Catholic church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. The 12th century Mudéjar tower is thought to have originally been the minaret of the mosque. Restored in 1805 it was given to the religious Order of the Servites in 1825. The church was named a national monument in 1931. The church has a relief of San Nicolas. The street and plaza have decorative tiles naming San Nicolas.
