The church, rebuilt around 1614, incorporates 12th or 13th century work. The earlier building was demolished when the river undermined its foundations. The tower was rebuilt in 1710. There have been modern restorations and vestries added.

One of the first teachers of Greek at Oxford, William Grocyn, served as rector from 1504 until 1513. His close friend Erasmus often visited at the Rectory, as did Richard III, who it is said stayed there before the battle of Bosworth Field. Novelist George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) also stayed as she had connections in Shottermill and Witley. The grave of three-year-old Margaret has a poem by her father, poet Thomas Love Peacock.
